Facts about Australian Homeless

1 in 201 Australians are currently homeless (ABS 2016).

49,200 people will sleep rough on the street across Australia this year (ABS 2016).

20.4% increase in the number of people sleeping on the street across Australia (ABS 2011 vs ABS 2016).

Women aged over 55 are the fastest-growing group of homeless Australians (ABS 2011 vs ABS 2016).

In 2017-2018: 44,116 people requesting short-term or emergency accommodation did not receive any or were only given a referral (AIHW 2018)

In 2017-2018: 99,370 people needed long term accomodation but did not recieve any or were only given a referral (AIHW 2018)

Nearly 60% of homeless people are aged under 35 years (ABS 2016).

Lack of affordable housing (rising property values)

Limited housing / rental stress

Poverty

Loss of employment, under-employment or inability to gain a new job

Lack of services for people suffering from mental illness

Family breakdown & violence
