OUR IMPACT

Proven by 800+ Homeless Agencies

Backpack Beds save lives - Donors make it happen

SROI - Social Return on Investment
Every $110 Backpack Bed = $3,319 in Community impact

For every Backpack Bed distributed to a homeless person without shelter, we deliver $3,319 in savings to the community in health, employment and justice costs.  More than $121 million of social impact has been provided by helping homeless Aussies on the streets across Australia (source: 180 Degrees Consulting, 2018).
  • Our $121 million of savings to the community was achieved with only 3 full time staff.
  • In the past 12 months we helped 7,000 street sleeping homeless people across Australia.

Our work is focused on Australia.
Due to demand, the success of the Backpack Bed emergency bed program has also reached New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Germany, Spain, Canada and USA.

Over 800 Homeless Agency Partners – Australia Wide

The Backpack Bed is used as emergency relief bedding for homeless without shelter. Sadly, the demand outweighs fundraising - we supply only around 10% of the 45,800 who will sleep on Australian streets this year (ABS 2021).

“Handing our kids one of these Backpack Beds rather than turn them away empty handed (from shelters) will help us to connect with them and increase the likelihood of them returning back to us where we will be able to offer help”. Major Paul Moulds, Salvation Army

“We believe every rough sleeper in Melbourne and Australia should have access to this form of humane crisis bedding … and made available at crisis accommodation services across the country” St. Vincent de Paul AgedCare & Community Services

Cornwall

The Backpack Bed is used as emergency relief bedding for homeless without shelter in the Cornwall area. Backpack Bed funding was provided by locals. The Cornwall Welfare Agency Partner wanted to be sure the Backpack Bed was suitable for local street sleeping homeless. This is the review by a local homeless man Jay. As a result, local fundraisers joined together to fund Backpack Beds. Survey results are being compiled.

Set up

The Backpack Bed has a surprising amount of internal space … Jay is 6ft 4” (193cm) and weighs 18.5 Stone (117kg). He says the Backpack Bed has superb space, could easily accommodate his belongings and would be fine if you had a dog too.

Ready for sleep

Setting up took less than a minute – Jay had never set the Backpack Bed up before. Note: built-in ropes – without using these, the Backpack Bed still works as a warm and enclosed space. Remember Jay’s height and weight, he looks far from cramped! The Backpack Bed takes up little space and the person inside is well protected from the elements.!

Jay in the early morning

“Clearly sleeping on the hard ground is never ideal but this was so much better than a doorway! At least I was warm and dry and so were my few possessions. It rained in the early hours, but I remained totally dry and the wind did not penetrate either. Bonus!”
