HELPING HOMELESS ACROSS AUSTRALIA
Backpack Bed for Homeless (Swags for Homeless Ltd) is a national registered charity helping Australians experiencing homelessness.
Over 122,000 Australians are homeless every day, and this year more than 45,800 Australians will sleep on the street.** In 2024–25, over 77,400 requests for short-term and emergency accommodation went unmet across Australia.** Tragically, the life expectancy of an unsheltered Australian man is just 46 years.*
We receive no government funding. Our work is made possible by people like you.
We partner with more than 1,100 homeless agencies across Australia to provide Backpack Beds and Fire Retardant Sleeping Bag Hypothermia Packs to people sleeping on the streets, in cars and without safe shelter.
Our assistance provides shelter, warmth, dignity, comfort and protection, while connecting people experiencing homelessness with local support services.
Our work has been recognised with an Australian Human Rights Award from the Australian Human Rights Commission. We are also a signatory to the UN Global Compact and align our work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
You can help a homeless Australian today. Donate online, fundraise, give through your workplace, foundation or trust, donate cryptocurrency, or leave a gift in your Will.

Bill's Story - Disabled Homeless Pensioner
Government apathy
"Being on the street is terrifying. I would not recommend it. Anyone can end up on the street at any time. There are no warnings."
Karl's Story - Bulletproof vests to homeless
"It’s like my own private house now, it means I’m not going to get wet, it means bugs aren’t gonna eat me alive. It means a lot, it’s like someone actually cares."
